What the checker tests

  • Your API key. Octopus swaps it for a short-lived sign-in, just as Wonder Watt does.
  • Your account. That the key can read the account number you entered, and which tariff you're on.
  • Your car or charger. That Octopus has a car or charger on your account for smart charging.
  • Your smart-charge slots. Any charging Octopus has planned, shown in UK time.

Every check runs in your browser, talking directly to Octopus. Wonder Watt never sees your key or the answers. Wonder Watt is an independent service, not affiliated with or endorsed by Octopus Energy.

Questions about your Octopus connection

Where do I find my Octopus API key and account number?

Sign in to your Octopus account on the web and open Personal details, then API access. Your API key starts sk_live_, and your account number (A- followed by 8 letters or numbers) is shown on the same page.

Is it safe to enter my API key here?

Your key is sent from your browser straight to Octopus's own API, and nowhere else. It never reaches Wonder Watt, it isn't stored, and it isn't put in the page address. Only your account number is remembered in this browser, to save you typing it again. If you're ever unsure, you can regenerate your key on the Octopus API access page: the old one stops working straight away.

It says Octopus has no working smart-charging device. What now?

Your key and account are fine, but Octopus isn't giving out smart-charging details for your car or charger. Check in the Octopus app that your car or charger is connected to Intelligent Octopus and that smart-charging slots show up there, then contact Octopus with the exact error message the checker shows. If no slots show in the Octopus app, Wonder Watt can't see them either.

Why are no smart-charge slots planned?

That's normal when your car isn't plugged in, or Octopus hasn't planned its charge yet. Plug in, set your target in the Octopus app, and run the check again once Octopus has planned the charge.

My key worked before. Why does it fail now?

If you or Octopus regenerated your API key, the old one stops working. Copy the new key from the API access page and paste it here, and into Wonder Watt too.

Does Wonder Watt need Intelligent Octopus Go?

No. Wonder Watt works with many tariffs, including Agile, Go, Flux and Cosy. Intelligent Octopus Go is needed only for the features that use your car's smart-charge slots, such as charging your home battery in them.
